About
Andrea Hoa Pham studies the sound systems and dialects of Vietnamese. She has been on the faculty at the University of Florida since 2002, where she is Professor of Vietnamese Language and Linguistics and Undergraduate Coordinator. She earned her PhD at the University of Toronto.
Her research covers Vietnamese phonology, sound change, dialect variation, and language and gender. Her book on the Quang Nam dialect (2022, 2025) traces how migration and contact between speech communities changed the way a region sounds. Vietnamese Tone: A New Analysis was published by Routledge in 2003 and translated into Vietnamese in 2023.
She also writes and translates poetry, including a bilingual collection with Lola Haskins.
